Chapter Nine

“Get you another burger?”

Justine smiled ruefully and waved off the offer. “I’m already stuffed, Laurel, but thanks.”

“So am I,” Laurel admitted with a wry laugh.

Justine figured the other woman was more than a few years older than her, but only because of the way she and Adam talked about their college days when Stefan had mentioned Justine was working on her graduate degree.

“Not that us all being stuffed stops my husband from stoking the coals in the barbecue over there,” Laurel added as she sank into the lawn chair next to Justine. “Looks like those two are done in for the night, too.” She nodded toward the blanket that was spread on the grass.

Morgan was sprawled on his back, sound asleep. So was his blanket-mate Larkin. Even though the toddler was two years older than Morgan, the cute little boy had been fascinated with the baby and hadn’t moved more than a few feet away from him since he and his parents showed up at Stefan’s house.

“We’re barging in whether you want us here or not,” Adam had said.

“We know what moving day is like,” Laurel had added. “So we’ve brought food and drink and just enough energy to get us all through dinner, at which point we promise to go away as quickly as we appeared.”

Justine had liked them both just as much as she’d liked Stefan’s brothers and their wives.

Plus, Adam and Laurel’s unexpected appearance helped dispel the awkward feeling that had begun building the minute Mark and Rodrigo left after unloading the trailer.

She had no clue if Stefan felt similarly relieved by his business partner’s arrival. The two men had talked nonstop brewery stuff the whole evening, leaving Justine and Laurel to fill the gap.

Fortunately, they were both moms. The conversation never lagged for that reason, alone.

“We’re having Adam’s brothers over to our place next weekend for a pool party. We’d love it if you came as well,” Laurel said now. “You’ll have had a chance to settle in here a bit, and Adam’s been wanting to show off the house now that we’re finally settled in.”

“Where’d you live before?”

“We were using one of the guest houses over at Callum’s. Have you met?”

Justine shook her head. “I’ve heard of him, of course. How he was responsible for developing the pediatric center.” His wife was one of the nurses there. “I’ve met Becky, though, when I’ve had to take Morgan there.”

Laurel nodded. “Right. Well, Callum’s one of Adam’s cousins.” She hesitated as if she expected some comment from Justine.

Was Justine supposed to know that? She’d lived in town long enough to know you couldn’t swing a cat without hitting someone named Fortune. But how they were all related would take a cartographer.

Her gaze drifted to Stefan. What she hadn’t expected was the proliferation of Mendozas.

As if he felt her attention, he looked up from the stack of blueprints he’d retrieved from inside the house. He and Adam both had the flashlight apps on their cell phones turned
